Metric Roller Chain

Metric roller chain, also known as ISO British Standard roller chain, is engineered to different specifications than ANSI/ASME Standard roller chain. PEER metric roller chains are manufactured based on ISO British Standard ISO606 which utilizes millimeters and kilograms as the units of measurement. While the materials and manufacturing processes are often very similar to the ANSI/ASME Standards, the designation, dimensions and load ratings are slightly different. ISO British roller chains are commonly referred to as short-pitch transmission roller chains. It's vital that you accurately and carefully measure critical chain dimensions to ensure that you are utilizing the right ISO or ANSI/ASME Standard roller chain and attachments to keep your project moving quickly and smoothly. Do You Need Metric Roller Chain?

For equipment purchased or manufactured internationally, ISO metric roller chain is commonly used in place of ANSI/ASME roller chain.  Due to dimensional differences, substituting ANSI/ASME roller chain for ISO British roller chain may lead to increased chain and sprocket wear.  Having the right chain is vital to the success of the project. Determining the differences between ISO British roller chain and ANSI/ASME roller chain can be a bit tricky.

Here are a few of measurements you will need to help determine the type of chain:

  • Measure the pitch – the center of one pin to the center of the next pin
  • Measure the sideplate thickness and height
  • Measure the roller diameter and width (distance between inner roller link sideplates)
  • Measure the overall pin length and diameter
